Progress is being made!

Hi Everyone! I'm pleased to announce that I'm making headway on the sequel to Grey Wolf. The new title is about a third of the way done (I know it's taken a long time to get to this point, but the research is the hard part and I'm onto the writting phase now).

I hope to have this second work done by the end of summer. I have no agent and no main stream publisher to help, (But I'm always looking!) so it's all on me. For those of you who've been waiting, I'm sorry it's taking so long, but I'm sure you'll be thrilled with the next installment.

To everyone who has supported Grey Wolf up until now, I give my heartfelt thanks!

Hi Again! Grey Wolf has been nominated for one of the annual awards given to deserving works by the Military Writers Society of America.

I am honored by this nomination and humbled to have been considered along with such deserving company as the other nominees.

I'll let you know what happens with the awards when the winners are announced.

"This was a very enjoyable read – historical fiction is a good way to learn about little known aspects of momentous events. Most of the events described in this book were taken from actual German war diaries. I was already interested in U-Boat warfare before I read this book, so I was an eager audience. Having said that, I highly recommend this gem of a read to anyone. In fact, I'm looking forward to reading the promised sequels."

Bruce D. Aiken:

I have read many books on naval history especially in the Pacific theater during the WWII era including "Pig Boats", books on Pearl Harbor and many of the operations that involved U-boats. This book is an excellent read. It flows well, the characters are well developed, and although it is fictional, it is quit believable. It is hoped that the author writes more sequels to Grey Wolf.

Stephen Hammond:

A friend tipped me off to this book; I don't usually read books on military history. However, I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued by the author's artful combination of fact and fiction. The level of detail makes it evident that the author has done extensive research on the subject, but it's his descriptive use of characters and their relationships that make this book such a great read! I hope a sequel is in the works!

I actually read this excerpt shortly after they were all posted as quarter-finalists. For some reason, the review did not go through. I am glad that I followed up on it because Grey Wolf is worth a second look. I particularly liked the idea of portraying the two officers (enemies). My own entry also uses the same idea, portraying a German woman during WWII. The author is very skilled in writing and the excerpt is an excellent demonstration of his writing abilities. I am by no means an expert on naval warfare, but I became involved in the scenes from the start. I enjoyed the fact that the descriptions include the officers' personal lives. I could find little to fault with the excerpt except that I would have liked to have learned something about the plot so that it would not appear to be just another "war story". However, my imagination ran with the imagery presented and I looked forward to turning each page...saddened when the last page appeared. Very nicely executed writing! I will look forward to reading a conclusion. I have a particular fondness for Historical Fiction, in particular topics centering on the two WW's. This one was right up my alley, so to speak. Good luck with it!

Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award

So far so good! I entered Grey Wolf in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award competition for this year and I'm pleased to announce that the novel has made it to the quarterfinals! That means out of 2500 Fiction entries, Grey Wolf A Novel In History is in the top 250. I'm not trying to jinx myself in the ongoing contest, but I thought I'd post the Amazon Expert Reviewers comments. Thank you all for your interest. Wish me luck!

What is the strongest aspect of this excerpt?

Grey Wolf tells the story of the beginning of WWII from the perspectives of a Royal Navy Lieutenant and a German U-Flotilla Captain. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of the stories of these two men, similar in temperament, skill, and courage but on opposite sides of the conflict.

What aspect needs the most work?

As with many works of historical fiction, there is a significant amount of explanatory detail. This can become over whelming or confusing.

What is your overall opinion of this excerpt?

The excerpt of Grey Wolf has clear, descriptive, high quality writing. The setting of the start of WWII viewed through the eyes of two military men on opposing sides was interesting and original. Although I don't usually read historical fiction, Grey Wolf was interesting and engaging, and is something that I would have liked to read in its entirety.

What is the strongest aspect of this excerpt?

Terrific setup, descriptions and historical accuracy from both British and German points of view which also broadens the story's perspective. The writing style is excellent and the dialogue well done.I've read quite a bit of historical fiction and the way this is setup, at least from the excerpt, gives it several possible plot lines and all of them strong.

What aspect needs the most work?

Some of the prose needs a little work as there are certain words overused. There are some awkward sentences that have structure problems. It is a bit jarring to have the young Scotsman killed right off but still that is war so understandable.

What is your overall opinion of this excerpt?

I believe if the writing is as good throughout the book as in the excerpt that this could be an exceptional historical novel in spite of the non-original idea. I believe this author has either notes or conversations or his own imagination that has lent a strong flavor to this novel so it would be something I would read.

Re-post: During the early years of WWII, the United States had only used submarines for coastal defenses. It took the Germans to prove the value of the submarine for attack purposes. Dave Huffman's book, "Grey Wolf" is intensely entertaining, combining historical context in an extraordinary novel of the events surrounding the German U-boat Command during the first days of WWII.

The author has obviously researched extensively in writing this novel. Verifiable facts, dates, procedures, and equipment are replete throughout the book. Each chapter makes the reader feel up close with the experience and action on board a German submarine.

I can't wait for his next book to be written!

I received a very kind review on my listing page at Amazon.com. I have copied it here, without permission from the author. :

"Although the kindle edition has some minor formatting and typos, this is an excellent book. I am no expert but the author seemed to be well versed on the subject and put together a novel which holds your interest. You cant beat the price. There are some real minor issues such as a few typos ( used new instead of knew a lot) and it is justified on several sections to the left so you have quite a few pages where there is one - three words in a line. Other than that overall this is a great book for WWII buffs."

I have since repaired the typos noted in the review.
